HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP

27th March 2020 16 Comments

Relaxing at night time and getting a good 8 hours sleep has always come easy to me; that was up until I had Elara. Babies and sleep tend to not happen together but luckily at around 7 weeks old Elara started sleeping through the night. Even though Elara was sleeping I was so stressed about a number of things that I still couldn’t sleep. So here are my top tips on how to get a good nights sleep.

reading yourself to a good nights sleep

Reading a good book every evening definitely helps me to switch off and get away from my phone and tv. It really sets up my night and completely calms me. Reading is my happy place. I am currently reading The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking which is full of beautiful tips on how to make your home cosy and hygge; perfect for good sleep.

get a good pillow spray

Pillow sprays are all over the market; from high end down to budget there’s a pillow spray for everyone. My favourite is the Feather and Down Sweet Dreams Pillow Spray, it has such a beautiful lavender scent with a hint of chamomile and is super calming. I love the scent so much that I even took it with me into hospital when I went into labour.

set up a sleep routine

Getting myself into a routine has helped me sleep so much better. Since Elara was tiny we’ve had an established night time routine and it occurred to me one day that as adults we don’t set ourselves a routine, which is strange as we know it all works so well with babies and children. I like to start the evening off with a relaxing bath, candles, spa music and a face mask. Followed up with the Feather and Down Body Oil which is scented the same as the pillow spray and relaxes me further. I then like to write in my journal and read a good book. I always do a thorough skincare routine before bed, you can find some of my favourite products here.

the calm app

After reading my book I use the calm app. Its full of sleep stories as well as soundscapes and music. Think of it as white noise for adults. It calms both me and my partner and we’ve found ourselves falling asleep quicker and a lot deeper as we are so relaxed. I have paid for the full year subscription and it is quite expensive but I think you get it offered to you at 50% off once you’ve completed the free trial. My favourite sleep story at the moment is View From Above by Terry Virts. Start your calm 7 day free trial here.

space mask experience

If the day has been particularly stressful, or I have a headache or I just want to practice a bit of self care I reach for a Space Mask. A luxurious self warming eye mask with the most gorgeous Jasmine scent. Honestly out of this world, love a good pun. Plus how cute do they look on your bedside table?

These are my little tips on how to get a good nights sleep. Let me know if you try any of them or what your favourite way to get a good nights sleep is. Everything is better with a good nights sleep. Treat yourself, you deserve it.

I keep hearing about pillow sprays – I feel like they weren’t a thing until recently? I’ll actually have to check them out – that mask sounds lovely too.

This is a great post especially for these crazy times at the moment! I purchased a pillow spray this week and it’s so relaxing! I also purchased my mum that Hygge book a couple of years ago so I will need to dig it out! Thanks for sharing.

My sleep is terrible, I started doing the relaxing music a few months ago and that has helped. Never tried a sleep mist, never they’d actually work?

I keep meaning to try the Feather and Down spray, it sounds amazing! I love Spacemasks and I tend to do a guided meditation from Insight Timer with mine on, that tends to guarantee a good night’s sleep!

Reading before bed is the only way I can fall asleep. I received a kindle this past year and use it every night! I love that I can fall asleep reading and don’t have to worry about losing my place in the book

I’ve been using a fabric spray with essential oils in it on my pillow (initially just to refresh fabric) and it has definitely helped me sleep better so I’m so glad you mentioned pillow sprays! I need to get into a better routine (which I’m doing) as my sleep is a bit disrupted at the moment — great tips!

Definitely need to establish a bedtime routine to get my body ready for sleep. I’m also thinking of getting a pillow spray and J might just try your Calm app suggestion
